Bananas are widely believed to grow on trees: this is incorrect. The banana is a plant whi
ch finishes all its growth in one year, reaching a height of 30 feet. Bananas have a subterranean (地下的) stem from which come large, green leaves. The plant reaches its maturity in about 18 months.

As the bunches of bananas mature and the fruit develops, they can be propped (支撑) up with poles and covered with blue polyethylene (聚乙烯) bags. These prevent injury, protect against the frost, and speed ripening by increasing heat and humidity.

Once the bananas plant has produced its fruit, the mother plant dies and is replaced by pups (sucker plants). These grow next to the parent and make a new generation of banana plants.

What would be the best title for this passage?

A.Beliefs About Banana Plants

B.The Growth of a Banana Plant to Maturity

C.A Year in the Life of a Banana Plant

D.Bananas Plants: from Birth to Maturity

Bananas

There are so many aspects to this strange and wonderful fruit. Even its shape is a bit mysterious, conjuring images of tropical islands and sun-filled days. Did you know that the word" banana" originates from the Arabic and means finger?

The banana is so popular in America today that four million tons of them are imported every year. One banana has less water, fifty percent more food energy, four times the protein, half the fat, twice the carbohydrate, almost three times the phosphorus, five times the Vitamin C and iron and at least twice the other vitamins and minerals as an apple! The average American eats 33 pounds of bananas a year. An excellent source of potassium and carbohydrates, they can be eaten any time of the day because of their digestive properties. Natural sugar provides energy for those sports requiring endurance and low proportions of sodium chloride are a good recommendation for salt free diets. Eat at least one banana a day, they are said to contain everything a human needs.

That is all quite impressive but where did the banana come from in the first place? Buddhist texts from 600BC mention the banana for the first time in history. Alexander The Great tasted bananas in the Indus Valley in 327BC and in his day they were called "pala". China records the presence of banana plantations as far back as 200AD. In 650AD Islamic conquerors brought bananas back to Palestine and through trade spread them all over Africa. Wild forms of the banana plant come originally from the Indo-Malaysian area and are now cultivated all over the tropical and sub-tropical continents. They were unknown to the New World until 1516 when Spanish missionary, Father Tomas de Berlanger, brought the first plants there.

How do they grow? The whole matter is extremely confusing. The banana tree itself (even though it is not a tree but a giant plant)is by definition a herb. What is a herb? It is a flowering plant with a fleshy, rather than woody, stem. Each stem consists of ten to fourteen hands, each carrying from eighteen to twenty bananas. The stem however is a false one, formed by tightly wrapped overlapping leaves, resembling stalks of celery. The plant belongs to the same family as lilies, orchids and palms and the fruit is a berry. By definition, a berry is a simple fruit having a skin surrounding one or more seeds in a fleshy pulp. A banana cut lengthwise will reveal very tiny black seeds within its center. Therefore, a banana is a fruit, herb, berry and plant all at the same time. Maybe that is where the expression" going bananas" meaning" going crazy" comes as people tried to decide what a banana really was!

There are about four hundred different varieties of this fabulous fruit. At this moment there are five different types of bananas common on the market. Red bananas have a green/red peel and pink fruit flesh. They taste the same as yellow bananas. The redder a fruit, the more carotene it contains. Carotene is commonly found in carrots and thought to be very healthy, although too much will turn your skin orange! Fruit-bananas are the normal, yellow bananas of about 15-30 cm whilst apple-bananas are smaller, 8-10 cm, and ripen faster. They are also yellow. The baby-banana(pisang susa) is yellow as well and measures 6-8 cm. It is the sweetest of the banana family. Finally baking-bananas are large, 30 to 40 cm. and arc green, yellow or red-like. They cannot be eaten raw. They fulfill the role of the potato in the tropical countries.

The three most important brands are Chiquita, Bonita and Fyffe. The Chiquita's production sites are located in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Columbia. The Bonita banana hails from Ecuador and is the cheapest of the three, but only because it is never advertised. Fyffe was founded in 1888 and has the distinction of being the oldest fruit brand in the world. These bananas are produced in Belize,

Some expressions describe people who are important or who at least think they are. One suc
h expression is "big wig". In the 17th century, important men in Europe began to wear false hair called wigs. As years passed, wigs began to get bigger. The size of a man's wig depended on how important he was.

The more important he was or thought he was, the bigger the wig he wore. Some wigs were so large that they covered the man's shoulders or back. Today the expression "big wig" is used to make fun of a person who feels important. People never tell someone he is a big wig. They only use the expression behind his back. "Big wheel" is another way to describe an important person. A big wheel may be the head of a company, a political leader, a famous movie star. They are big wheels because they are powerful. What they do affects many people. Big wheel gives the orders and other people carry them out.

As in many machines, a big wheel makes the little wheel turn. "Big wheel" became a popular expression after World War Ⅱ. It probably comes from an expression used for many Years by people who fit parts of the cars and trucks. They said a person whirled a big wheel if he was important or had influence.

The top of something is the highest part of something. So it is not surprising that top is part of another expression that describes an important person. The expression is "top banana". A top banana is the leading person in a comedy show.

The funniest comedian is called the "top banana". The next is second banana, and so on. Why a "banana"? A comedy act in earlier days often included the part where one of the comedians would hit others over the head with a soft object. The object was shaped like the yellow food — the banana. "Top banana" is still used mainly in show business. Yet the expression can also be used to describe a top person in any area,

A "kingpin" is another word for an important person. The expression comes from the game of bowling. The kingpin is the No. one pin. If it is hit correctly by the bowling ball, the kingpin will make all the other nine pins fall. And that is the object of the game. So the most important person in a project or business is the kingpin. If the kingpin is removed, the project or business is likely to fail. Kingpin is often used to describe an important criminal or the leader of a criminal gang. A newspaper may report, for example, that the police have arrested the suspected kingpin of a car stealing operation.

This passage is mainly about______.

A.important people

B.how to describe important people

C.important expressions

D.expressions for important people

U. S. Blacks Hard-hit by Cancer

Death rates for cancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more likely to die of cancer than whites, the American Cancer Society said Monday.<br>

In a special report on cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually diagnosed with cancer later than whites, and they are more likely to die of the disease. This could be because of unequal (不平等的) access to medical care, because blacks are more likely to have other diseases as well, and perhaps because of differences in the biology (生物学) of the cancer itself, the report added.<br>

"In general, black Americans have less hope of surviving five years after diagnosis than whites for all cancer sites and all stages of diagnosis," the report said.<br>

"In describing cancer statistics for black Americans, this report recognizes that many of the differences associated with race may be caused by unfair social and economic differences and unequal access to medical care."<br>

The cancer society said blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups (体格检查) earlier, when cancer is more treatable, and it said more research is needed to see if biological differences play a role.<br>

"The new statistics emphasize the continuing importance of wiping out these unfair social differences through public policy and education efforts," the organization said in a statement.<br>

But it also noted a drop in cancer death rates.<br>

"Cancer death rates in both sexes for all sites combined have dropped greatly among black Americans since 1992, as have incidence rates (发生率) ," said the report.<
