听力原文:W: Alexander, you speak quite good English. How did you learn a foreign language
so well? You know English is really a headache for me. I just don't know how to learn it well.

M: Well, when learning a foreign language, I would surround myself in the language, the target language, that I wanted to learn.

W: Surround oneself in the language? I think it is difficult to do that. Can you explain how you do it?

M: Uh, for example, I would watch a movie in that language, uh, which would help me keep motivated to learn vocabulary and phrases.

W: That sounds interesting.

M: Yeah, you'll have a lot of fun by doing so.

W: I see. A little hit of practice every day is very important to language learning.

M: Yes. Regular practice is also better than practicing a lot in one day. Learning a language well needs patience and perseverance.

W: Then what else did you do to learn a foreign language?

M: Well, I would keep a situational notebook.

W: What is that used for?

M: Ur, for example, in a restaurant, you use a certain phrase over and over again, and so if you can remember just one particular phrase in each setting, then you can immediately speak that language and have more confidence and you get more out of learning the language, I think.

W: Really? I'll try that. Thank you for your advice.

M: You're welcome.

EContacts (交往) between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In the last thirty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world.

Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder the foreign businessman and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners.

The American businessman, for example, wants of start talking business immediately. He wants quick decisions. He does not wait. The Japanese, on the other hand, likes to arrive at decisions gradually after giving them a great deal of thought.

Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means “Yes” or “No”. This is because of cultural difference for a Japanese to say “No” directly.

In English, it is easy to say “No” to something we do not want to do. But in Japan it is very difficult to say “No”. To refuse an invitation or a request with “No”, or a similar phrase, is felt to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish (自私) and unfriendly. So instead of saying “No” directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid saying “No”. These enable them to avoid hurting other people’s feeling. However, this often makes communication with the Japanese difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.

I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric farm
er. I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make out was that someone called Milly had a very bad accident. I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go.

It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died. "She meant more to me than anyone… even my own wife!" he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal. I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn. "I would not leave her out in the cold !" he said.

Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his. I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door. He lifted his candle and I saw a dark figure on the ground. "She was such a good cow! I wouldn't let anyone but a doctor touch her!" he said, and burst into tears again.

The underlined phrase "make out" in the first paragraph means ______.

A.expect

B.understand

C.see clearly

D.hear clearly
