Everyone knows how the story of Cinderella ends, but did you ever really think about how s
he spent her days before she met the prince? Her daily routine was not fascinating. She did everything from sweeping the floor to cooking the meals. If someone had asked Cinderella, "Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate?" She probably would have answered, "Why, none, of course. Housework is my duty!" In the real world, however, most people have definite dislikes for certain sorts of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing clothes and washing dishes.

Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled individually, so ironing a basket of laundry can take hours! After ironing a piece of clothing with great caution, which requires smoothing out the fabric, and following the seams, you need to place it on a hanger as soon as possible. If you do not follow these directions carefully, it might become wrinkled and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end.

Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because we have dishwashers now! How-ever, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher don't come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continue to wash our dishes by hand, but we are not necessarily happy doing it. Cleaning dishes is a job that not only takes a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually must be done every day. I don't know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.

For Cinderella, doing household work is______.

A.an assignment

B.a compulsion

C.an obligation

D.a burden

he best way to raise money for the Thanksgiving party at the student center?

W: It won't be easy.

M: Thanks a lot !

W: Oh, I'm just kidding. Actually, I think once we show how much money it could bring in, we'll be sure to convince everyone on campus to pitch-in.

M: Well... how are we going to get the message out?

W: One thing I was thinking of is to hang up handout on the bulletin boards.

M: But that's not going to attract much attention. We need to do something interesting.

W: Let me finish: I know someone who works at the campus print shop. Last week he said he could get hold of materials to make a big banner. That'll attract the attention of a lot of students if we can hang it in front of the student center.

M: Nice work !

W: I've also arranged to have an article published in the school paper next Wednesday. That way you can get the message out to the entire campus.

M: Uh-oh, that means I better come up with an article pretty quickly. How about if I write it up and I'll let you be the first to read it. How about alter English class tomorrow?

W: Sounds like a plan. I'll see you then.

M: You're the greatest. I don't think I would have known what to do without your help.

听力原文:W: Tom? Do you think you could come into the kitchen for a second? There's someth
ing I'd like you to look at.

M: What? Just let me finish these books and I'll be right there.

W: Would you mind coming right away, please? It's the washing machine. It's making a funny noise. I want you to listen to it. I'm worried.

M: Oh, no. Not again. (In the kitchen now. )It's the pump, that's what it is.

W: I can't hear you. Let me turn the machine off!

M: The pump isn't working properly. So what do you want me to do about it?

W: What do I want you to do about it? Repair it, of course. You don't think I made you leave your work for nothing, do you?

M: But I'm not a mechanic. Why don't you ring the shop where we bought the thing? Ask them to repair it!

W: Are you sure that's what you want me to do?

M: Of course, I'm sure! Why do you ask?

W: Because the last time they came you got very angry.

M: Did I?

W: Yes. It was a small question of money. Don't you remember? The men were only here for half an hour but they still charged two pounds for an hour's work. You didn't like that at all.

听力原文:M: I really don' t know what to do this summer. I can' t afford to just sit aroun
d, and there don' t seem to be any jobs available.

W: Why don' t you try house-sitting? Last summer my friend Margaret house-sat for the Dodds when they went on vacation. Mr. Dodd hired Margaret to stay in their house because he didn't want it left empty.

M: You mean the Dodds paid Margaret just to live in their house?

W: Yes, but it wash' t that easy. She had to mow the lawn and water the house plants. And when Eric house-sat for Dr. Cohen, he had to take care of her pets.

M: House-sitting sounds like a good job. I guess it' s little like babysitting - except you're taking care of a house instead of children.

W: The student employment office still has a few jobs posted.

M: Do I just have to fill out an application?

W: Margaret and Eric had to interview with the homeowners and provide three references each.

M: That seems like a lot of troubles for a summer job.

W: Well, the homeowners want some guarantee that they can trust the house sitter. You know, they want to make sure you' re not the type who'll leave things around in the house, or move a group of friends in with you.

M: House-sitters who do that sort of thing probably aren' t paid then.

W: Usually they' re paid anyway just because the homeowners don' t want to make a fuss. But if the homeowner reported it, then the house-sitter wouldn' t be able to get another job. So why don' t you apply?

M: Yes, I think I will.

What does the man want to do this summer?

A.Stay at home.

B.Go to an evening class.

C.Take a vacation.

D.Get a job and earn some money.
