Nanotechnology

Many of the grand challenges of today and the future are found in the question: "How are we going to solve the problems and make serious improvements in industrial manufacturing, disease control, environmental pollution control, global climate change, food production, transportation, communication, and others?"

Nanotechnology (纳米技术 ) promises to make revolutionary contributions.Within the next few years we can expect to see major improvements. Here are some possibilities the things to come.Nanotechnology is fundamentally changing the way materials and devices will be produced in the future.

Nanostructures, ceramics, polymers, metals, and other materials will have greatly improved mechanical properties. In fact, with the ability to build things atom-by-atom and molecule-by-molecule there will be new classes of structural materials.Nanotechnology will enable products to be lighter, stronger, smarter, cheaper, cleaner, and more precise.

The ability to synthesize nanoscale budding blocks with precisely controlled size and composition and then to assemble them into larger structures with unique properties and functions will revolutionize segments of the materials manufacturing industry. Nanotechnology is expected to bring about lighter, stronger, and programmable materials ; reductions in life-cycle costs through lower failure rates; innovative devices based on new principles and architectures ; and use of molecular cluster manufacturing.

Nanotechnology will provide new tools for medicine. It could radically change the way surgery is done.It will make it possible to do molecular scale surgery to repair and rearrange cells.Since disease is the result of physical disorder, misarranged molecules and cells, medicine at this level should be able to cure most diseases.

Mutations in DNA could be repaired and cancer cells, toxic chemicals, and viruses could be destroyed through use of medical Nan devices.

Nanotechnology enabled increases in computational power will permit the characterization of macromolecular networks in realistic environments.Such simulations will be essential elements in the development of biocompatible implants and in the drug discovery process. Nanotechnology has the potential to significantly impact energy efficiency, storage, and production, Nanotechnology can change the economics of energy production.

The passage deals mainly with__________. 查看材料

A.grand challenge in manufacturing, medicine and computer industry

B.possibilities of nanotechnology"s contributions in the future

Government Policies and Economy

While he was off on his l978 tour,Americans were becoming disgusted with their lot as all“emerging second—class nation”,Wilson says. They began to see that incentives had to be restored to the economy. For instance, the capital gains tax was cut,an extraordinary turn—about. If it had been predicted before he went away in May,he would have said it was simply inconceivable as inconceivable as the prospect of Resorts going up1,000 percent.

This momentous transformation in the U.S.should soon bring about a huge bull market. In the l940s and l950s,the last time price earning multiples were at these low levels, the investing public expected that there would be another great postwar depression.Instead,aRer the beginning of l953 it became apparent that there would not be one,and price-earnings multiples got so low this time that investors felt that the country was drifting into socialism. That drift, however, may be reversing direction.

Wilson believes that the bankruptcy of New York City means the discrediting of big government, that as a result there will be less government, and that things in general will go much better. From l980’s depressed levels the market could rise to twenty times doubled earnings or almost fivefold in five to seven years.Wilson believes that he’ll be worth hundreds of millions of dollars before it’s over.

From paragraph l,we can infer that Resorts is__________. 查看材料

Satiric Literature

Perhaps the most striking quality of satiric literature is its freshness, its originality of perspective.Satire rarely offers original ideas.Instead, it presents the familiar in a new form.Satirists do not offer the world new philosophies. What they do is look at familiar conditions from a perspective that makes these conditions seem foolish, harmful, or affected.Satire jars us out of complacence into a pleasantly shocked realization that many of the values we unquestioningly accept are false.Don Quixote makes chivalry seem absurd; Brave New World ridicules the pretensions of science; A Modest Proposal dramatizes starvation by advocating cannibalism.None of these ideas is original.Chivalry was suspect before Cervantes, humanists objected to the claims of pure science before Aldoua Huxley, and people were aware of famine before Swirl. It was not the originality of the idea that made these satires popular. It was the manner of expression, the satiric method, that made them interesting and entertaining. Satires are read because they are aesthetically satisfying works of art, not because they are morally wholesome or ethically instructive. They are stimulating and refreshing because with common sense briskness they brush away illusions and second-hand opinions. With spontaneous irreverence, satire rearranges perspectives, scrambles familiar objects into incongruous juxtaposition, and speaks in a personal idiom instead of abstract platitude.

Satire exists because there is need for it.It has lived because readers appreciate a refreshing stimulus,an irreverent reminder that they live in a world of platitudinous thinking, cheap moralizing, and foolish philosophy. Satire serves to prod people into all awareness of truth, though rarely to any active on behalf of truth. Satire tends to remind people that much of what they see, hear, and read in popular media issanctimonious, sentimental, and only partially true.Life resembles in only a slight degree the popular image of it. Soldiers rarely hold die ideals that movies attribute to them, nor do ordinary citizens devote their lives to unselfish service of humanity.Intelligent people know these things but tend to forget them when they do not hear them expressed.

What does the passage mainly discuss? 查看材料

A.Difficulties of writing satiric literature

You&39;ll be late for work again!" The possiB.le explanation to the trouB.le is that John isat his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. 阅读材料,回答题:

The first navigational lights in the New World were probably lanterns hung at harbor en-trances. The first lighthouse was put up by the Massachusetts bay Colony in 1716 on Little brew-ster Island at the entrance to boston Harbor. Paid for and maintained by "light dues" levied (征收) on ships, the original beacon was blown up in 1776. Until then there were only adozen or sotrue lighthouses in the colonies. Little over acentury later, there were 700 lighthouses.

The first eight lighthouses erected on the West Coast in the 1850s featured the same basicNew England design:aCape Cod dwelling with the tower rising from the center or standing closeby. In New England and elsewhere, though, lighthouses reflected avariety of architectural styles.

Since most stations in the Northeast were set up on rocky eminences (高处), enormous towerswere not the rule. Some were made of stone and brick, others of wood or metal. Some stood onpilings or stilts; some were fastened to rock with iron rods. Farther south, from Maryland throughthe FloridA.Keys, the coast was low and sandy. It was often necessary to build tall towers there——massive structures like the majesticlighthouse in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, which was lit in1870. 190 feet high, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country.

Not withstanding differences in construction appearance, most lighthouses in Americasharedseveral features : alight, living quarters, and sometimes abell (or, later, afoghorn). They alsohad something else in common: akeeper and usually the keeper"s family. The keeper"s essentialtask was trimming the lantern wick (灯芯) in order to maintain asteady, bright flame. The earli-est keepers came from every walk of life, they were seamen, farmers, mechanics, rough millhands and appointments were often handed out by local customs commissioners as political plums.

After the administration of lighthouse was taken over in 1852 by the United States Lighthouseboard, and agency of the Treasury Department, the keeper corps gradually became highly profes-sional.
