Cost as a Factor in Supply

In a purely competitive market, the supplier of goods and services has no control over the market price, because he produces too little to influence market conditions. With no difference between his products and the products_____(51) his competitors, he will sell nothing if he charges above the market price and he will sell all if he charges at or_____(52) the market price. However, in considering the price, he must take the_____(53) of production into consideration. There are times when he may be willing to sell below his cost. This might happen when prices tumble for_____(54) he believes will be a short time. However, no business person can_____(55) to lose money for a prolonged period. He must be constantly_____(56) of his costs in relation to the market price if he is to compete successfully and earn a profit.

Many people have the impression that as production increases, costs per unit decrease._____(57) mass production has made this true in certain industries and at certain levels of production_____(58) logic and practical experiences have shown that costs per unit begin to rise beyond a certain level of production. Some economists_____(59) to this principle as the law of increasing costs.

The reason costs rise as production goes up is_____(60). However, it is easy to recognize that as production goes up, the need for additional factors of production will also grow,_____(61) competitive bidding in the marketplace for the factors of production. If a producer needs_____(62) skilled labor to produce more, and none of this labor is unemployed, the producer will have to get_____(63) from other sources. This can be done by_____(64) higher wages. Higher bidding would also apply to the other factors of production. We must also recognize that not all labor is equally productive,_____(65) not all land is equally fertile and not all ore (矿石) is equally rich in the mineral wanted.

Medical bills in the United States have risen violently since 1960's and steps need to be
taken to reverse this trend or the average American will not be able to afford medical care. The major factor in increasing the cost of medical care has been the dramatic increase in the cost of hospital services. The rise in the cost of hospitalization can be only partly blamed on inflation (通货膨胀)since hospital bills in the last two decades have risen at a considerably higher rate than inflation.

Another factor cited by doctors as a major cause for the increase in the cost of medical care is malpractice(治疗错误). Increasingly large awards for malpractice have caused doctors to increase their rates to cover the higher malpractice insurance. Because of the large malpractice awards, doctors are also prescribing more conservative and more extensive and therefore more costly treatment for patients as a defense against malpractice claims. Whatever the causes of the wild increases in the cost of medical care are, the government needs to take strong action before it is too late for Americans.

The passage is mainly about ______.

A.the increasing cost of malpractice insurance

B.factors causing the increase in U. S. medical bills

C.steps for Americans to take to obtain medical care

D.the dramatic medical profession

回答题When companies consider their benefits mix.coverage for medical care is often top.of
-mind.Yet there may be another, even more powerful concern driving employee coverage preferences:vision care.Roughly 75%of adults in the United States require some type of vision correction.and 84 percent of adults believe that vision benefits are somewhat or very important to them.As a result.vision assistance is moving higher and higher on the list of sought.after employee benefits. What’s driving the trend? One factor is the increasing power of eye examinations to detect systemic illness. In addition to identifying nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, routine eye exanls now play a role in diagnosing conditions such as diabetes, brain aneurysms(脑动脉瘤),liver disease and stroke risk. Early identification,in turn, translates into markedly lower expenditures for employers. In 2014,eye problems will cost companies an estimated$8 billion in reduced productivity.Making sure employees get the right eye care helps employers reduce these losses. At the same time,it boosts their ability to retain loyal workers. So what’s the best way to get patients into the exam chair? One way is to provide a vision plan that lowers out-of-pocket(自已付费的)expenses.Indeed,research shows that out-of-pocket expense——not premiums——is the number-one factor employees consider when choosing a-vision plan.“And that’s just smart.”says independent insurance broker Shannon Enders.“Premiums make up only about 30 percent of total out.of-pocket expenses. So it pays to100k beyond the premium and see the real cost of a plan.”A study conducted by Service Excellence Group Inc.,a leading market research company, shows how the right vision insurance plan can result in across—the-board(全面的)savings for employees. The study compared the prices customers with different insurance plans paid for the same popular pair of eyeglasses at independent doctors and retail chains. It found that customers with insurance plans that were most successful at keeping out-of-pocket expenses low saved hundreds of dollars. With eyeglasses becoming as much of a fashion accessory(装饰品)as a vision aid,forward-thinking companies are beginning to take note.Enders says more of his clients are saying yes to vision care plans.“Employees care about their eyes,”he says.“And offering benefits packages with the features employees care most about will become an even more important corporate strategy going forward.”

What is the meaning of the last sentence of paragraph one?

A.Vision assistance is listed on the list of popular worker interests.

B.Vision assistance is becoming more and more popular among employees。

C.Vision assistance is considered as one of the employee benefits.

D.Vision assistance is the top concern of the employees.

The American economic system is organized around a basically private-enterprise, market-or
iented economy in which consumers largely determine what shall be produced by spending their money in the marketplace for those goods and services that they want most. Private businessmen, striving to make profits, produced these goods and services in competition with other businessmen; and the profit motive, operating under competitive pressures, largely determines how these goods and services are produced. Thus, in the American economic system it is the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes, that decide how resources are used to produce it.

An important factor in a market-oriented economy is the mechanism by which consumer demands can be expressed and responded to by producers. In the American economy, this mechanism is provided by a price system, a process in which prices rise and fall in response to relative demands of consumers and supplies offered by seller-producers. If the product is in short supply relative to file demand, the price will be bid up and some consumers will be eliminated from the market. If, on the other hand, producing more of a commodity results in reducing its cost, this will tend to increase the supply offered by seller-producers, which in mm will lower the prize and permit more consumers to buy the product. Thus, price is a more regulating mechanism in the American economic system.

The important factor in a private-enterprise economy is that individuals are allowed to own productive resources (private property), and they are permitted to hire labor, gain control over natural resources, and produce goods and services for sale at a profit. In the American economy, the concept of private property embraces not only the ownership of productive resources but also certain rights, including the right to determine the price of a produce or to make a free contract with another private individual.

What does the sentence "the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes" mean in Para. 1?

A.Americans are never satisfied with their incomes.

B.Americans tend to overstate their incomes.

C.Americans want to have their incomes increased.

D.Americans want to increase the purchasing power of their incomes.

The fact that superior service can generate a competitive advantage for a company does not
mean that every attempt at improving service will create such an advantage. Investments in service, like those in production and distribution, must be balanced against other types of investments on the basis of direct, tangible benefits such as cost reduction and increased revenues. If a company is already effectively on a par with its competitors because it provides service that avoids a damaging reputation and keeps customers from leaving at an unacceptable rate, then investment in higher service levels may be wasted, since service is a deciding factor for customers only in extreme situations.

This truth was not apparent to managers of one regional bank, which failed to improve its competitive position despite its investment in reducing the time a customer had to wait for a teller. The bank managers did not recognize the level of customer inertia in the consumer banking industry that arises from the inconvenience of switching banks. Nor did they analyze their service improvement to determine whether it would attract new customers by producing a new standard of service that would excite customers or by proving difficult for competitors to copy. The only merit of the improvement was that it could easily be described to customers.

The primary purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.contrast possible outcomes of a type of business investment.

B.suggest more careful evaluation of a type of business investment.

C.illustrate various ways in which a type of business investment could fail to enhance revenues.

D.trace the general problems of a company to a certain type of business investment.
