Dear Ms. Montague,
As you are probably aware, the recent smoking ban has had a (150) impact on our business. Our sales have dropped 40 percent in the last six months. Though we do not expect this to be a long-term concern for our business, we don't expect sales to return to normal until the summer when our patio opens for the tourist season.
Due to the loss in business we regret (151) you that we are laying off all of our hosts and hostesses for the winter and spring. With business being so slow our servers can handle the task of greeting and seating customers on their own.
You are (152) to two week's severance pay, which will be paid in full on your next paycheck.
Please come in for any scheduled shifts next week.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication at Pino's Pizzeria. Please apply again for our next summer season.
Sincerely,
Franco Bellini

"In tradition-minded Britain the Turner Prize is often controversial and no more so than this year. In addition to Ms. Rachel Whiteread's casts of the interiors of old houses due for demolition, the judges also considered a work that consisted of a room filled with seven metric tons of rice lit by pink neon lights. Even that would have trouble equaling one of the entries in last year's Turner Prize competition--it was a display of 37 fish inside glass cases."
In awarding Ms. Whiteread the Turner Prize, Lord Polumbo, Chairman of the British Arts Council spoke of the ridicule nontradltional artists face.:" The artist exploring the new is liable to derision and hostility. The new is always shocking, but there is nothing new about that."
The newspapers here have had a lot of fun with the Turner Prize. The conservative Daily Mail headlined "Disaster in Plaster". The very serious Independent had a front page story headlined" Turner Prize won by worst artist". The Times approach was similar "Turner's best equals the worst". What both were referring to is the fact that in addition to a $ 30,000 Turner Prize for the year's best work, Rachel Whiteread won $ 60,000 from something called the K Foundation for, in its view, producing the worst art of the past twelve months. The K Foundation was started by a millionaire rock-and-roll group. A Foundation spokesman said the idea was to point out what he called the hypocrisy of all these awards".
As far as Ms. Whiteread was concerned, the most distressing event of the evening wasn't the spoof a- ward as worst artist; it was the fact that her major work, a concrete casting called "house", is to be demolished at the order of the local governing council in East London at the end of this month.
Rachel Whiteread is______.
A.a traditional artist
B.a sculptor
C.an interior decorator
D.a house designer

RE: Workshop
As you know, sales have plummeted over the past few months due to the current recession. We are going to have to make a concerted effort to pull our company out of its slump. I'm confident that we are able to boost sales to their previous level. I feel that this is a good time to have a workshop.
It's my desire that the workshop will afford us an opportunity to rethink some of our sales strategies and develop a concrete plan for boosting sales. I've asked Ms. Linda Davis to conduct a workshop for us. You may remember Ms. Linda Davis. She conducted a workshop for the sales department a few years ago. She's a dynamic speaker.
The theme of the workshop will be marketing and product development. It will be held in the Blue Room on December 20 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 RM. Lunch will be provided. Ms. Linda Davis is preparing handouts. The handouts will be distributed at the workshop.
However, I'll send them to you at the beginning of December so that you can know what will be going on at the workshop. Please take a look at them before December 20. If you have any particular topics that you would like Ms. Linda Davis to address, please let me know.

Subject: Workshop
Dear Mr. Ramon Rivera,
I' m looking forward to the workshop. I remember meeting Ms. Linda Davis.
If my memory serves me right, she lives in Los Angeles. Will she fly back to Los Angeles on December 21 after the workshop? It would be great if we could go out to dinner with her after the workshop and pick her brains about the best strategies for marketing.
I' 11 be out of the country on business for about one week in early December, but I can look at the handouts after I get back. There are some topics that I would like to see addressed at the workshop, but I' 11 wait until I' ve seen the handouts. Ms. Linda Davis may be planning to discuss the topics.
Regards,
Dorothy Yost
What does Mr. Ramon Rivera attribute the decline in sales to?
A.Inefficient sales strategies
B.Circumstances beyond his company' s control
C.A lack of concerted effort
D.Slow product development

Milltown Community Theater
Board Meeting Minutes
Sunday, November 16
Milltown Public Library
OPENING: President Eliot Rogers conducted the meeting. He introduced the new board member, Anita Russell. Ms. Russell has volunteered at the theater since its beginning. She most recently worked to successfully secure financial support for next season's productions.
MINUTES: Minutes from the September 28 meeting were approved with minor corrections.
FINANCIAL REPORT: The financial statements from October were reviewed by Patty Schmidt, Treasurer. She explained that recent reductions noted in the operating fund were due to a rise in the price of heating oil. Schmidt noted that a grant has been received from the Acme Savings Bank. These funds will be used to initiate a summer program for children.
DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: Members of the committee led discussions of recent attempts to obtain new grants, other fund-raising possibilities, and an initiative to attract publicity for the theater through local businesses.
NEXT BOARD MEETING: The next meeting of the board will be on Sunday, January 25, at 2:00 P.M. in the Milltown Public Library.
Meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
