Fifty volunteers were alphabetically divided into two equal groups, Group A to participate
in a 7 week exercise program, and Group B to avoid deliberate (故意的,蓄意的) exercise of any sort during those 7 weeks. On the day before the exercise program began, all 50 men participated in a step-test. This consisted of stepping up and down on a 16-inch bench at 30 steps a minute for 5 minutes. One minute after completion of the step-test, file pulse rate of each subject was taken and recorded. This served as the pretest for tile experiment. For the next 7 weeks, subjects in the experimental group (Group A) rode an Exercycle (a motor-driven bicycle-type exercise machine) for 15 minutes each day. The exercise schedule called for riders to ride relaxed during the first day's ride, merely holding on to the handle bars and foot pedals as tile machine moved. Then, (or the next 3 days, they rode relaxed for 50 seconds of each minute, and pushed, pulled, anti pedaled actively for 10 seconds of each minute. The ratio of active riding was increased every few clays, so that by the third week it was half of each minute, and by the seventh week the riders were performing 15 solid minutes of active riding.

At the end of the 7 weeks, the step-test was again given to both groups of subjects, and their pulses taken. The post-exercise pulse rates of subjects in the experimental group were found to have decreased an average of 30 heart beats per minute, with the lowest decrease 28 and the highest decrease 46. The pulse rates of subjects in the control group remained the same or changed no more than 4 beats, with an average difference between the initial and final tests of zero.

Tile step-test was given ______.

A.after each exercise period

B.at the beginning and at the end of the seven week period

C.only once, at the beginning of the seven week period

D.twice to the men in Group A and once to the men in Group B

Subject: Management Training Sessions

Attachments: goodman_calendar.doc

Hi Steve,

It was good to hear from you earlier today. It's been very busy around here too. We just finished our job candidate interviews yesterday. This means that today we will meet to figure out which candidates we would like to talk to further. It will probably be a long meeting.

I am glad you contacted me about when we can organize this year's executive management training sessions. It's hard to believe this will be the third year we've done it. I'm sending you my calendar for the month of April, so we can pick our dates. As you'll see, I'm pretty open at this point. Once we have the dates figured out, we should talk about whether we'd like to change any parts of the curriculum from last time. We should put together an initial list of people to invite.

I would also like to talk about turning our training materials into a book, but this is not urgent.

I hope you are well. Thanks for taking the initiative on organizing the third training session.

The growth of population during the past few centuries is no proof that population will co
ntinue to grow straight upward toward infinity and doom. On the contrary, demographic history offers evidence that population growth has not been at all constant. According to paleo-ecologist Edward Deevey, the past million years show three momentous changes. The first, a rapid increase in population around one million B.C., followed the innovations of tool-making and tool-using. But when the new power from the use of tools had been exploited, the rate of world population growth fell and became almost stable.

The next rapid jump in population started perhaps 10,000 years ago, when men began to keep herds, plow and plant the earth. Once again when initial productivity gains had been absorbed, the rate of population growth abated.

These two episodes suggest that the third great change, the present rapid growth, which began in the West between 250 and 350 years ago, may also slow down when, or if technology begins to yield fewer innovations. Of course, the current knowledge revolution may continue without foreseeable end. Either way contrary to popular belief in constant geometric growth-population can be expected in the long run to adjust to productivity. And when one takes this view, population growth is seen to represent economic progress and human triumph rather than social failure.

Which of the following is net true according to the passage?

A.Human population expands at an exponential rate.

B.Population growth has shown fluctuation in demographic history.

C.Population growth can not be regarded as a social failure.

D.Increase in population is related to productivity.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States in 1932, not only the United S
tates but also the rest of the world was in the throes of an economic depression. Following the termination of World War I, Britain and the United States at first experienced a boom in industry. Called the Roaring Twenties, the 1920s ushered in a number of things - prosperity, greater equality for women in the work world, rising consumption, and easy credit. The outlook for American business was rosy.

October 1929 was a month that had catastrophic economic reverberations worldwide. The American stock market witnessed the "Great Crash", as it is called, and the temporary boom in the American economy came to a standstill. Stock prices sank, and panic spread. The ensuing unemployment figure soared to 12 million by 1932.

Germany in the postwar years suffered from burdensome compensation it was obliged to pay to the Allies. The country's industrial capacity had been greatly diminished by the war. Inflation, political instability, and high unemployment were factors helpful to the growth of the initial Nazi party. Germans had lost confidence in their old leaders and heralded the arrival of a messiah-like figure who would lead them out of their economic wilderness. Hitler promised jobs and, once elected, kept his promise by providing employment in the party, in the newly expanded army, and in munitions factories.

Roosevelt was elected because he promised a "New Deal" to lift the United States out of the doldrums of the depression. Following the principles advocated by Keynes, a British economist, Roosevelt collected the spending capacities of the federal government to provide welfare, work, and agricultural aid to the millions of down-and-out Americans. Elected President for four terms because of his innovative policies, Roosevelt succeeded in dragging the nation out of the depression before the outbreak of World War II.
