I want to divide human understanding into two kinds—classical understanding and romantic u
nderstanding. In terms of ultimate truth, a distinction of this sort has little meaning, but it is quite legitimate when one is operating within the classic mode used to discover or create a world of underlying form. The terms classical and romantic, as Phaedrus used them, mean the following:

A classical understanding sees the world primarily as underlying form. itself. A romantic understanding sees it primarily in terms of immediate appearance. If you were to show an engine or a mechanical drawing or electronic scheme to a romantic, it is unlikely he would see much of interest in it. It has no appeal because the reality he sees is its surface. Dull, complex lists of names, lines and numbers. Nothing interesting. But if you were to show the same blueprint or give the same description to a classical person, he might look at it and then become fascinated by it because he sees that within the lines and shapes and symbols is a tremendous richness of underlying form.

The romantic mode is primarily inspirational, imaginative, creative, intuitive. Feelings rather than facts predominate. "Art" when it is opposed to "Science" is often romantic. It does not proceed by reason or by laws. It proceeds by feeling, intuition and esthetic conscience. In the northern European cultures the romantic mode is usually associated with femininity, but this is certainly not a necessary association.

The classic mode, by contrast, proceeds by reason and by laws—which are themselves underlying forms of thought and behavior. In the European cultures it is primarily a masculine mode and the fields of science, law and medicine are unattractive to women largely for this reason. Although motorcycle riding is romantic, motorcycle repair and maintenance are purely classic. The dirt gives it such a negative romantic appeal that women never go near it.

From the context of Paragraph 1, we can learn that the author is, or was at least at the moment when he or she was writing this passage, in ______ .

A.the classic mode

B.the romantic mode

C.both modes

D.neither modes

John: I guess so. At least the rifle(书名) suggests something new.

Mary: You"re right. The author said she 61 (borrow) it from a friend who recently had a kid. It has just five words, 62 she finds it the best way of 63 (describe) the true nature of being a parent. John: The 65 (write) sees things from her own point of view.

Mary: So she does.

Intelligent Machines

(1) Medical scientists are already putting computer chips (芯片) directly into the brain to help people who have Parkinson&39;s disease, but in what other ways might computer technology be able to help us? Ray Kurzweil is author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines and is one of the world&39;s best Computer research scientists. He is researching the possibilities.
(2) Kurzweil gets computers to recognize voices. An example of this is Ramona, the virtual (虚拟的 ) hostess of Kurzweil&39;s homepage, who is programmed to understand what you say. Visitors to the site can have their conversations with her, and Ramona also dances and sings.
(3) Kurzweil uses this technology to help people with physical disabilities. One of his ideas is a"seeing machine". "This will be like a friend that could describe what is going on in thevisible world," he explains. Blind people will use a visual sensor (探测器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This sensor will describe to the person everything it sees.
(4) Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the "listening machine". This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. The listening machine will be able to translate into other languages, so even people without heating problems are likely to be interested in using it.
(5) But it is not just about helping people with disabilities. Looking further into the future,Kurzweil sees a time when we will be able to download our entire consciousness onto a computer. This technology probably won&39;t be ready for at least 50 years, but when it arrives, it means our mind will be able to live forever.

Passage Three:Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. The concept of “enviro
nment” is certainly difficult and may even be misunderstood; but we have no handy substitute. It seems simple enough to distinguish between the organism and the surrounding environment and to separate forces acting on an organism into those that are internal and biological and those that are external and environmental. But in actual practice this system breaks down in many ways, because the organism and the environment are constantly interacting so that the environment is modified by the organism and vice versa (反之亦然).

In the case of man, the difficulties with the environmental concept are even more complicated because we have to deal with man as an animal and with man as a bearer (持有者) of culture. If we look at man as an animal and try to analyze the environmental forces that are acting on the organism, we find that we have to deal with things like climate, soil, plants and such-like factors common to all biological situations; but we also find, always, very important environmental influences that we can only class as “cultural”, which modify the physical and biological factors. But man, as we know him, is always a bearer of culture; and if we study human culture, we find that it, in turn, is modified by the environmental factors of climate and geography. We thus easily get into great difficulties from the necessity of viewing culture, at one moment, as a part of the man and, at another moment, as a part of the environment.

第61题:Which of the following words can best describe the popular understanding of “environment” as the author sees it?

A) Elaborate.

B) Prejudiced.

C) Faultless.

D) Oversimplified.
