Then when I felt better, I thought about visiting him at his home, but he lived too far away. I tried to telephone him during office hours but he was busy. The receptionist said that Mr. Jarden would call me back. But he didn't. I gave up trying to make a new appointment because it would take more time and effort than I wanted to spend. 听力原文:M: Did you take these pictures.'? They're very good.

W: Yes, I think they turned out well too. I like to take my camera with me wherever I go. That way, if I see something interesting, I can snap a picture of it.

M: Carrying a big camera around is too much trouble for me.

W: My camera is really small, though. Here let me show you.

M: That is a compact camera, but you really must know a lot about photography to get such professional looking results.

W: Not necessarily, this camera is simple to operate.

M: Does this model come with flash attachment for indoor shots?

W: Better than that. It has a built-in electronic flash and an automatic focus too. I don't even have to worry about focusing.

M: That's what I need when I take pictures. They usually come out blurry because I don't adjust the lenses properly and I hate photos that are out of focus. Is a camera like yours very expensive?

W: Less than you'd expect. Why don't you check the prices at Hatfield's down the street? This model was on sale there last week.

(23)

B.He doesn't think he knows enough about film processing.

C.He doesn't have a flash attachment.

听力原文:M: I'm sorry I'm late, Cindy.

W: That's all tight, Joe. My house isn't that easy to find. But you know, you wouldn't have gotten lost if you had a "smart" car.

M: A smart car? What's that?

W: I just read a magazine article about some new technology that can make a car smart. One device is a computerized map display and a synthesized voice, you must enter the address where you want to go, and the voice tells you how to get there, street by street.

M: Hey, that's just like my brother. He never gets lost, and he's always telling me the best route. So what else will smart cars be able to do?

W: Well, the article said that they'll be equipped with radar warning systems that will warn drivers if they're getting too close to other cars with an alarm signal, and they'll even put on the brakes if the drivers don't.

M: Tell me, Cindy, will these cars be smart enough to fill themselves up with gas?

W: Not that I know of. Why do you ask?

M: Well, I'm late not because I got lost—I'm late because I ran out of gas on the way over here.

How to Read

A few years ago I was shopping with a friend and his 12 year-old daughter in downtown San Francisco. A street musician, whom my friend happened to know from his own musician days, was playing the saxophone(萨克斯管)on a street corner. His name was Clifford, and he had attracted a large crowd with his performance. After he finished, my friend introduced him to me and his daughter. Clifford asked her if she played any instrument. When she replied that she was taking trumpet(小号)lessons and played in her junior high school band, he said, "That's fine, little lady. Learn your instrument well and you can play anything."

Somehow these simple yet wise words struck me as appropriate not only for a trumpet player but also for a reader. If you learn to read well, you can read anything you want--not just newspapers and magazines, but more difficult material like philosophy, film criticism, military history-whatever interests you as your confidence grows. You would not be limited in any way. If you have the vocabulary or at least a good dictionary near at hand-you can pick up a book, concentrate in it, and make sense of the author's words.

In the United States, reading instruction often ends at elementary school, so students sometimes have difficulty as they progress through school. They must take their assignments armed only with their elementary school reading skills. The result, too often, is frustration and loss of confidence. And the assigned reading in your college courses will be even greater than they were in high school. Developing Reading Skills is designed to accomplish several tasks: to show you the skills that will enable you to read with greater comprehension, to help you cope with reading assignments With confidence, and to teach you to become an active reader.

The author develops his point by starting with ______.

A.an example

B.an incident

C.a statement

D.a contrast
