听力原文: Like most other folk art, the calendar pictures were not considered to be art in their own day. People just thought of them as a way of decorating a practical object. In fact, the calendar pictures were originally printed as advertising for various companies that made hunting or fishing products, like guns or fishing rods. The calendars were handed out free to the customers to thank them for the business.

Most people just hung the calendars on their walls with the pictures faded in the sun and then tore the pictures off the calendar as each month passed. As a result, collectors today place a lot of value on the calendars that are complete and in good condition.

Even though the people who used the calendars didn't regard them as art, the original paintings were often of good quality. In fact, many famous wild life painters created calendar art at some point in their lives. To them it was a way of getting their work reproduced and shown around. One interesting thing is the way these pictures reflect changing attitudes towards wild life. The pictures often portray the adventure of hunting rather than any particular concern for wild life preservation, But most of today's wild life art shows animals in their natural surroundings without any humans in the scene. This modern wild life art appeals to a large number of the nature lovers, even those who are opposed to the practice of hunting.

(33)

Most newspapers print letters from readers with problems. There are answers written by doctors, lawyers or educators. 听力原文: Leo Tolstoy was a famous Russian writer of the nineteenth Century. He lived between 1828 and 1910. He wrote many novels. Two of his most famous works are War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

Tolstoy was born into a wealth family. However, he was not happy that others were poor. He did not like living the rich life when others did not have food or money. In fact, Tolstoy often dressed like a peasant. He wanted the simple life.

In his novels, Tolstoy wrote about many things, but one of his most important themes was nonviolence. His ideas about nonviolence influenced two other famous leaders: Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. In fact, Tolstoy and Gandhi wrote letters to each other when Gandhi was in South Africa. Tolstoy's ideas helped Gandhi to use nonviolence.

Martin Luther King, the American civil rights leader, also believed in nonviolence. In his demonstrations during the 1960s, he always avoided violence. He helped to win more rights for Blacks.

Thus, Tolstoy the great Russian writer of the nineteenth century, greatly influenced two other great leaders of the peace movement.

听力原文: If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men's work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking,

(30)

A.Seasonal variations in nature.

B.How intelligence changes with the change of seasons.

C.How we can improve our intelligence.

D.Why summer is the best season for vacation.

听力原文: Cars are an important part of life in the United States. Without a car most of people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car.

Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn't know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The ear made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today.

There are three main reasons why the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form. of the transportation.

The second reason is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form. of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world.

The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don't like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don't like to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

(30)

A.When they don't have a job.

B.When they don't have a car.

C.When they can't afford a house.

D.When they live in a large city.

听力原文: Americans like to laugh and make jokes, especially practical jokes. These jokes, intended to trick or deceive people in some harmless way, and are always popular. In the United States and a few other countries the first day of April, April Fool's Day, is a day devoted to such harmless practical jokes and an excuse for every American to fool his friends and neighbors.

When I was a college student, our daily college newspaper, which was read by most of the people who lived in the city near the college as well as by students, always had a special April Fool's Edition. One year the paper said that a beautiful park in the center of the campus was to be turned into a parking lot.

Another year the paper falsely reported that a Russian submarine had been seen in the lake which is on the campus. It was surprising that many people believed these stories. But probably the most successful practical being invaded by people from Mars. His description of this invasion from outer space was so realistic that he caused a panic and was actualy responsible for the deaths of several people.

(30)

A.A joke played on the April Fool's Day.

B.A harmless joke intended to trick people.

C.An American joke.

D.A joke in college newspapers.

听力原文: Good morning, and welcome to American studies 101. I would like to begin this semester by discussing the region of the United States known as the Northeast. This region includes twelve states and a small area called the District of Columbia that is the home of the national government.

The Northeast is a very important part of the United States, for although it covers only about six percent of the nation's geographical area, it contains approximately one-fourth of the country's population. New York, the most popular city in the United States, and several other large cities are located in this region.

Why are these twelve states so important? In the first place, the Northeast was one of the first sections of the country to be settled by Europeans. Busy cities developed there when most of America was still a sparsely settled wilderness. Many crucial events in the nation's early history took place there. I'll be describing some of those events Wednesday in my second lecture.

Today the Northeast is a great manufacturing and trading region. Thousands of factories produce a wide variety of goods and provide other regions of the country, with items they need. Many large manufacturing firms have their central headquarters here. Some of the country's largest banks, investment agencies, and publishing houses are found in the Northeast. Several of its cities are noted for their fine museums. Some of the country's best known colleges and universities are also located in this region.

Finally the Northeast is the principal location for much of the country's international trade. In the heart of this region New York city is the home of the United Nations.

(33)

A.On the first day of class.

B.At the end of the first week of classes.

C.Halfway through the semester.

D.Just before the final examination.
