Doubtful Ways to Reduce and Increase Your Weight

You hear this: "No wonder you are fat. All you ever do is eat." You feel sad: "I skip my breakfast and Supper. I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?" Basically you can do nothing. Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.

Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that, "80 percent of the children of two obese (肥胖的) parents become obese, as compared with no more than 14 percent of the offspring of two parents of normal weight."

How can obese people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective, but the health costs are tremendous. Jules Hirsch, a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a liquid formula providing 600 calories a day. After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost 45kg on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained weight. The results were surprising: by metabolic (新拜代谢的) measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet. They were anxious and depressed; some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms. Researchers warn that it is possible that weight reduction doesn't result in normal weight, but in an abnormal state resembling that of starved non-obese people.

Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite: They have to make a great effort to gain weight. Ethan Sims, of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months after the study ended, they were back to normal weight and stayed there.

This does not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower their weight.

The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true - each person has a comfortable weight range. The range might be as much as 9kg. Someone might weigh 60-69kg without too much effort. But going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks.

What determines your weight?

A.Your working manner.

B.Your eating habit,

C.Your life style.

D.Your genes.

Ways to Create Colors in a Photograph

There are two ways to create colors in a photograph. One method, called additive, startswith three basic colors and adds them together to produce some other color.Thesecond method, called subtractive, starts with white light (a mixture of all colors in the spectrum(光谱))and, by taking away some or all other colors, leaves the one desired.

In the additive method, separate colored lights combine to produce various other colors. The three additive primary colors are green, red and blue (each providing about one-third of the wavelengths in the total spectrum). Mixed in varying proportions, they can produce all colors.Green and red light mix to produce yellow; red and blue light mix to produce magenta (a purplish pink) ;green and blue mix to produce cyan (a bluish green). When equal parts of all three of these primary-colored beams of light overlap(重叠), the mixture appears white to the eye.

In the subtractive process colors are produced when dye (染料)absorbs some wavelengths and so passes on only part o{ the spectrum. The subtractive primaries are cyan, magenta and yellow; these primaries or dyes absorb red, green and blue wavelengths respectively, thus subtracting them from white light. These dye colors are the complementary colors to the three additive primaries of red, green and blue.Properly combined, the subtractive primaries can absorb all colors of light, producing black. But, mixed in varying proportions, they too can produce any color in the spectrum.

Whether a particular color is obtained by adding colored lights together or by subtracting some light from the total spectrum, the result looks the same to the eye.The additive process was employed for early color photography. But the subtractive method, while requiring complex chemical techniques, has turned out to be more practical and is the basis of all modern color films.

第 36 题 What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.Recent developments in camera technology.

B.How to make white light.

C.The additive and subtractive methods of producing color.

D.The discovery of the spectrum.

American's genius with high technology may have put men on the moon, but there is growing
skepticism about its ability to solve human problems closer to home.

In fact, a subtle but significant shift from purely technological solutions is already under way as scientists argue openly for new directions in research.

A growing number of scientists insist that answers to the world's problems will not come from a flashier array of electronics and machines. Instead, as they see it, solutions must evolve from a better understanding of the humans that drive the system and from a fuller appreciation of the limits and potential of the earth's resources.

What this means is an increased emphasis on the life and earth sciences, on sociology, psychology, economies and even philosophy.

More and more of the best minds in science, particularly young researchers, are being &awn into these developing fields.

All this is not to say that technological creativity will not play a critical role in solving energy and food shortages, or that answers to environmental difficulties will not come from further advances in the same technologies that may have helped cause the problems.

Where the real challenge lies, in the view of the new breed of scientists, is in finding ways to produce goods to meet the world's needs, using less of the raw materials that are becoming scarce.

Which of the following best expresses the main idea?

A.A growing number of Americans are doubtful about what high technology can do in solving the world's problems.

B.Many scientists are beginning to believe that the better understanding of human beings will play a more decisive role in solving the world's problems.

C.More and more young scientists are trying their best to find new ways to solve the world's problems.

D.Technological creativity will still play a very important part in solving the world's problems.

Men have distinguished themselves from other animals, and in doing so secured their surviv
al by the ability to observe and understand their environment and then either to adapt to that environment or to control and adapt it to their own needs. The process of careful observation, perception of a pattern in the phenomena observed, followed by use of this knowledge, has largely inspired the area of human activity known as "science".

It has also provided the basis for the traditional methodology of science. It includes objective observation, description of some phenomena, the statements of hypotheses(假说) about the events observed and possible relationships among them, the use of these to predict future events, the evidence of the hypotheses and the construction of a theory based on the evidence of the hypotheses.

But the classic "scientific method" has been criticized from a variety of points. To begin with, it is obvious that the "objectivity" of science strictly characterizes only the lowest order of scientific activity—observation. Even here it is doubtful whether anyone can be a truly impartial observer of events.

What someone chooses to observe and the way one observes it must, after all. in part be a reflection of experience and of ideas as to what is important. Consider, for example, the different ways in which an artist and a layman look at a painting and the different reactions they have to the same work. The construction of hypotheses and theories reflects the scientist's interpretation of what he or she has observed even more clearly than observation. At this stage of the scientific method, an element of subjectivity is inevitably present. This can most easily be seen in the extreme case of scientists of truly creative genius. Galileo, for example, challenged the scientists of his day with his hypothesis that the earth revolved around the sun. A twentieth century example is Watson and Crick's discovery of the molecular structure of DNA. Obviously, science may involve not only careful observation but also a willingness to be creative.

Human beings differ from animals because they can ______.

A.adapt to their environment

B.control their environment

C.adapt the environment to their need

D.observe and understand their environment

听力原文: Coffee is part of an international industry Research shows that as many as one-third of the people in the world drink coffee. But not everyone may know the story of coffee and how it is produced. One popular story about the discovery of coffee long ago is about Kaldi, (29)a keeper of goats. Kaldi was taking care of his goats in the highlands of Ethiopia where coffee trees had grown for centuries. (29)He noticed that his goats became very excited and active after eating small fruits from a tree. Kaldi reported this discovery to a group of religious workers. When they made a drink out of the fruit, the religious workers realized they could stay awake for long hours of prayer. Coffee trees can grow up to nine meters high, but they are cut short for production. The plant produces a fruit that is called a coffee cherry. When the coffee cherries are ripe and ready to be, picked, they are bright, red and firm. (30)Inside the fruits are the green coffee beans. After these beans are roasted at high temperatures they are ready to be made into a drink. There may only be two main kinds of coffee plants. (31) But geography and climate differences have a big effect on the many different ways coffee can taste. For example, coffee grown in Ethiopia is known for its lively, sharp taste and its flowery smell. Coffee from the island of Sumatra has a full body with an earthy and intense taste.

A.A hunter.

B.An old woman.

C.A religious worker.

Since Word War Ⅱ, there has been a clearly noticeable trend, especially among the growing
group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stages of adolescence, "go steady" through high school, and map before their formal education has been completed. In some quarters, there is much clucking (咯咯叫) of middle-aged tongues over the ways of "wayward youth". However, emotional maturity is no respecter of birthdays; it does not arrive automatically at twenty-one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do even in three-score years and ten.

Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from an unsatisfying home life, but also from their own personal problems of isolation and loneliness. And it can almost be put down as a dictum (格言) that any marriage entered into as an escape cannot prove entirely successful. The sad fact is that marriage seldom solves one's problems; more often, it merely accentuates them. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether the home as an institution is capable of carrying all that the young are seeking to put into it; one might say in theological terms, that they are forsaking one idol only to worship another. Young people correctly understand that their parents are wrong in believing that "success" is the ultimate good, but they wrongly believe that they themselves have found the true centre of life's meaning. Their expectations of marriage are essentially utopian (乌托邦的) and therefore incapable of fulfillment. They want too much, and tragic disillusionment is often bound to follow.

Shall we, then, join the chorus of "Miseries" over early marriage? One cannot generalize: All early marriages are not bad any more than all the later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not by age but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own merits (优点). If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with relatively few illusions or false expectations, and if it is economically feasible, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to sixty, and so can bad ones.

Middle-aged people seem to view the trend toward early marriage as ______.

A.a healthy sign

B.an indication of growing responsibility on the part of youth

C.perfectly natural by today's standards

D.an indication of immaturity of today's youth
