I have been asked on occasion whether I would like to live my life over again. On the whol
e it has been a pretty good life, perhaps better than most peoples, but I should see no point in repeating it. It would be as idle as to read again a detective story that you have read before. But supposing there were such a thing as reincarnation, belief in which is explicitly held by three quarters of the human race, and one could choose whether or not one would enter upon a new life on earth, I have in the past sometimes thought that I should be willing to try the experiment on the chance that I might enjoy experiences which circumstances and my own idiosyncrasies, spiritual and corporeal, have prevented me from enjoying, and learn the many things that I have not had the time or the occasion to learn.

— Read the text on the opposite page about running meetings.

— In most of the lines 34 - 45 there is one extra word. It is either grammatically incorrect or does not fit in with the meaning of the text. Some lines, however, are correct.

— If a line is correct, write CORRECT on your Answer Sheet.

— If there is an extra word in the line, write the extra word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

— The exercise begins with two examples, (0) and (00).

MAKE SURE YOUR MEETINGS RUN SMOOTHLY

A well run meeting can achieve much, but a badly run meeting is unlikely

to achieve anything, and indeed may damage on an important project's

34 progress. Meetings should create a sense of the harmony, but they can

35 cause confusion. In normal circumstances, so meetings should be planned

36 well in advance, both in terms of who will attend it and what will be discussed.

37 Overcrowded meetings suggest managers lack their self-confidence and

38 mean there will be too much of discussion on every minor point. The only

39 points that should be discussed are those that require a decision. If you need

40 your staff to update you on something, ask them to send information you

41 can read in your own time. Before a meeting starts, establish for the finishing

42 time, and stick to it. If you let one only meeting run over, then all your meetings

43 will. Make sure the purpose of the meeting is clear there to all concerned, so

44 that everyone stays as focused. Coffee breaks should be regular, and taken

45 away from the table, to maintain energy and concentration at optimum levels.

Questions 23-28

•Read the newspaper article below about business telecard.

•For each question (23-28), choose the correct answer.

•Mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet.

BUSINESS TELECARD INTERNATIONAL

You can use your Business Telecard International at any card phone in the UK. Here is some information about making international phone calls.

You can now phone almost any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call major cities. When you cannot make direct dialling calls, you can ask the international operator to help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else; in this case you should ask for a “person-to-person” call. Even more expensive is a reverse charge call where the person who receives the call pays.

If the international line is busy, you can reserve a call; explain the number you want and the operator will call you back when the line is free.

You can save money by calling outside office hours, e.g. early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays. Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling. International time is based on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time); London is on GMT and Moscow, for example, is 3 hours ahead. There is one problem; change to DST (Daylight Saving Time) for the Summer. In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in Spring and put back in Autumn, and so London is actually one hour ahead of GMT in the Summer. If you are unsure about the time, the operator-will help you.

You can use your Business Telecard International for domestic calls as well, but there will be an additional charge over the standard rate.

What is the most expensive type of call?

A.Reverse charge call.

B.Through the operator.

C.Direct dial.

Nearly all "speed reading" courses have a "pacing" element--some timing device which lets
the student know how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every five or ten minutes and noting down the page number you have reached. Check the average number of words per page for the particular book you are reading. How do you know when five minutes has passed on your watch if you are busy reading the book7 Well, this is difficult at first. A friend can help by timing you over a set period, or you can read within hearing distance of a public clock which strikes the quarter hours. Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the same kind of easy, general interest books. You should soon notice your accustomed w. p. m. rate creeping up.

Obviously there is little point in increasing your w. p. m. rate if you do not understand what you are reading. When you are consciously trying to increase your reading speed, stop after every chapter (if you are reading a novel) or every section or group of ten or twelve pages (if it is a textbook) and ask yourself a few questions about what you have been reading. If you find you have lost the thread of the story, or you cannot remember clearly the details of what was said, reread the section or chapter.

You can also try "lightning speed" exercise from time to time. Take four or five pages of the general interest book you happen to be reading and read them as fast as you possibly can. Do not bother about whether you understand or not. Now go back and read them at what you feel to be your "normal" w. p. m. rate, the rate at which you can comfortably understand. After a "lightning speed" reading through probably 600 w. p. m. you will usually find that your "normal" speed has increased--perhaps by as much as 50-100 w. p. m. This is the technique sportsmen use when they usually run further in training than they will have to on the day of the big race.

According to the passage, a "pacing" device ______.

A.is used as an aid to vocabulary learning

B.is not used in most speed reading courses

C.is used to time a student's reading speed

D.should be used whenever we read alone

听力原文: You might think the largest library in the world would be in Europe. But it isn't. It's in Washington. D.C. It's called the Library of Congress.

President John Adams started the library in 1800 for members of Congress. He wanted them to be able to read books about law. The first 740 books were bought in England. They were simply set up in the room where Congress met. Then Thomas Jefferson sold Congress many of his own books. He felt Congress should have books on all subjects, not just on law. This idea changed the library for good.

The library grew and grew. Now it covers acres of land. It contains 20 million books as well as scores of pictures, movies, globes and machines. Experts in every field work here. Hundreds of people call every day with all kinds of questions. Many of them get answers right over the phone.

The library is a large storehouse. Thomas Edison's first movie and Houdini's magic books reside there. And it is the proud owner of the world's best collection of comic books.

(33)

A.Experts in every field.

B.American president.

C.European countries.

D.Members of Congress.
