Moods, say the experts, are emotions that tend to become fixed, influencing one's outlook
for hours, days or even weeks. That's great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simply lonely.

Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology(药理学)offers an abundance of tranquilizers(安眠药), anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don't realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you loose from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don't head for the drug-store, try the following approach.

Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic(增氧健身的)exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a had mood. "If you could keep the exercise, you'd be in high spirits," says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.

Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compare favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise--running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and sustained activities that boost the heart rate, increase circulation and improve the body's utilization of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a session, three to five times a week.

What is the main subject of the passage?

A.How to beat a bad mood.

B.How to do physical exercises.

C.How to talk bad moods out.

D.How to be involved in aerobic exercise.

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and
wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes miserable. This arises from different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds. The people who are to be happy fix their attention on the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the contrary things.

Therefore, they are continually discontented. By their remarks, they sour the pleasures of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be critical. The tendency to criticize and be disgusted is perhaps taken up originally by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are convinced of its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious consequences in life, since it brings on deep sorrow and had luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect, and scarcely that. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining some advantage in rank or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone stir a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public disapproval, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their misconduct. These people should change this bad habit and condescend (俯就) to be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

People who are to be unhappy ______.

A.always consider things differently from others

B.usually are influenced by the results of certain things

C.can discover the unpleasant part of certain things

D.usually have a fault-finding habit

Among the minds powers is one that comes of itself to many children and artists. It need n
ot be lost, to the end of his day, by anyone who has ever had it. This is the power of taking delight in a thing, rather than in anything, everything, not as a means to some other end, but just because it is what it is, as the lover dotes on whatever may be traits of the beloved object. A child in the full health of his mind will put his hand flat on the summer turf, feel it and give a little shiver of private glee at the elastic firmness of the globe. He is not thinking how it will do for some game or to feed sheep upon. That would be the way of the wooer whose mind runs on his mistresss money. The childs is sheer affection, the true ecstatic sense of the things inherent characteristics. No matter what the things may be, no matter what they are good or bad for, there they are, each with a thrilling unique look and feel of its own, like a face; the iron astringently cool under its paint, the painted wood familiarly warmer, the cold crumbling enchantingly down in the hands, with its little dry smell of the sun and of hot nettles; each common thing a personality marked by delicious differences.

听力原文:Narrator: First we heard medical studies saying that caffeine in coffee was proba
bly bad for the heart, but recent research showed that coffee may be good for the cardiovascular system, that left coffee lovers like Corrine Mckillop to wonder.

Corrine Mckillop: I'd like to know which it is. It's very confusing. Is it good or is it not good?

Narrator: Well, a new study may explain the conflicting information. According to the research, coffee can be both good and bad. It all depends on you and which version of a gene you have.

Dr. Sean Kenniff: Researchers believe that about haft of us axe carrying a gene that allows the body to break down caffeine quickly. The rest of us have the type of gene that more slowly metabolizes the stimulant.

Narrator: In the study scientists discovered coffee drinkers with the faster version of the gene had no increased risk of heart disease; however, people with the gene that breaks down caffeine slowly had a significantly higher risk.

Dr. Sean Kcnniff: When the caffeine circulates in your body for a long period of time, you might in fact experience adverse health consequences from that. Now all of us want to know the same thing.

Corrine Mckillop: Well. I'd like to find out what gene I have.

Narrator: Well, that's the bad news. There is a test to find out, but it probably won't be readily available for a while. So what to do until then, the answer is, in a word--moderation. The study also found that people with a slower gene can limit their risk if they limit their coffee to one or two cups a day.

(23)

A.The influence of coffee on the heart.

B.What kind of gene is beneficial to people.

C.How to find out what gene one has.

D.How many cups of coffee people should have each day.
