听力原文: In the 1930s, archaeologists discovered spear points in the New Mexico town of Clovis, dated from around 13,000 years ago. The individuals who made them have since become known as the "Clovis people" and are believed by many to have been the first people to enter North America.

The "Clovis first" theory proposes that around 14,000 years ago people traveled across a land bridge that existed between Siberia and Alaska. Once in North America, their journey took them through a corridor that opened up between the ice sheets in Western Canada making them the first to be able to enter the interlor of the continent. It's an elegant and almost biblical explanation; but more recent fossil finds question the theory. Some researchers believe the first people entered North America much earlier—perhaps as long as 20,000-30,000 years ago.

In more recent years, the Pacific coast has been seen as an alternative route of entry-possibly at an earlier date than the Clovis. There is little direct evidence to support this, but fossil evidence from the islands of south-east Alaska tells us that this region, or part of it, was free of ice and may have been a refuge for animals throughout the ice age.

If animals such as bears and foxes lived here then why not people? Fossilized human remains have been found on Alaska's Prince of Wales Island and much further south on the Channel Islands off California. These are thought to be as old as some of the Clovis .finds and it may only be a matter of time before older remains are discovered.

If people did travel down the coasts between islands, they must have used boats. Although the coastal route still lacks a lot of hard evidence, the relatively recent discovery of a stone tool off the coast of British Columbia has added support to the idea.

Why are "Clovis people" believed to first enter North America?

A.Some fossils have been discovered.

B.They were found to have lived in the area known as the refuge during the ice age.

C.Some spear points were discovered.

D.It is in accordance with the biblical explanation.

听力原文: The last radical change in cinema was the development of color. Colored photography was possible from the 1860s, but early films were normally black and white and any coloring was painted on by hand—an expensive, slow and not very effective technique.

In 1922 the first real color films were produced, using a two-color system called Technicolor. It was quite common at that time to film whole sequences in one color and the attempts to mix colors to get realistic effects were not very successful, in 1932 Technicolor was improved by the use of three main colors and, in general, the same system is used today.

Color took longer to be accepted than sound. It was expensive and people often felt, oddly, that it was less realistic than black and white. This was partly, of course, because the quality was not always very high and so the scenes could look very peculiar. Since the 1930s there have been many improvements in the techniques of cinema, and the style. of acting has changed a good deal. But after fifty years the basics—moving pictures, color and sound are still the same.

(30)

A.Since the 1860s.

B.Since the 1920s.

C.Since the 1930s.

D.Since the 1960s.

听力原文: A recent report has shown that here in the United States, we've experienced an evolution concerning our attitudes towards the workweek and the weekend. Although some calendars still mark the beginning of a week as Sunday, more and more of us are coming to regard Monday as the first day of week with Saturday and Sunday comprising the twoday period thought of as the weekend. In fact the word "weekend" didn't even exist in English until about the middle of last century. In England at that time, Saturday afternoons had just been added to Sundays and holidays as a time for workers to have off from their jobs. This innovation became common in the United States in 1920, but as the workweek shortened during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the weekend expanded to two full days Saturday and Sunday. Some people thought that this trend would continue due to increasing automation and the workweek might decrease to four days or even fewer. But so far this hasn't happened. The workweek seems to have stabilized as forty hours made up of five eighthour days. After this commercial I'll be back to talk about tile idea of adding Monday to the weekend.

(33)

A.Shifting job opportunities.

B.The evolution of the weekend.

C.Attitudes toward employment.

D.Attitudes toward leisure activities.

听力原文: The farm economy of the United States has changed a lot in tile last seventy years. In the 1930s, 25 percent of the nation's population lived on farms (32) . Today less than one percent of Americans do.

Farm incomes have changed over the years too. For example, in 1933, people living and working on farms had much less money to spend than other Americans. At that time, farm families had about one-third the income of non-farmers after all necessary expenses had been paid. By the late 1970s, however, that difference had almost disappeared (33) .

In 2004, farmers had their best year ever. The United States Department of Agriculture says the average farm family earned about 81,000 dollars. That is more than the average American family, which earned about 60,000 dollars. Yet these numbers do not completely explain the situation for all farmer.. Those who have small farms often take other jobs to earn extra income. And farm earnings for large farms grew faster than for small ones (34) .

The Department of Labor measures the pay of industrial workers differently. It measures the average hourly and weekly pay for industrial workers. This is because factory workers are generally paid by the hour unlike farmers who earn income from their farm businesses. Industrial workers are about 23 percent of the labor force. But that number has been decreasing (35) . Most Americans have jobs that provide services. Professional technical and other services employ about 76 percent of the labor force.

(33)

A.About 25 percent of the population.

B.Less than 23 percent of the population.

C.About 76 percent of the population.

D.Less than 1 percent of the population.

听力原文: The most common kind of consolidation today is the merger. A merger occurs when two or more companies get together to form. one company.

With the deregulation of natural gas, the nation's 20 interstate pipeline companies became fearful of cut-throat competition. Some felt that they could increase their efficiency and improve their market flexibility by merging. In 1985 Internorth of Omaha paid $2.3 billion for Houston Natural Gas Corporation, thereby gaining control of the world's longest pipeline. The system connected markets from coast to coast and raised sales to $10 billion.

On occasion, mergers have occurred between smaller companies in an industry dominated by a few giant firms. These smaller companies claim that they need to merge to become more efficient and effective. They maintain that such action increases competition instead of reducing it. The Antitrust Division of the Justice Department has not always agreed with them.

Four major waves of mergers have taken place in this country. The first started in 1887, just prior to the passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act, and ended in 1904. It involved such giants as United States Steel and Standard Oil trying to create monopolies in their industries. From the end of World War I until the 1930s, large firms swallowed smaller firms to create oligopolies. The monopoly has no chance and the oligopoly little chance of succeeding today under present antitrust policy.

The third major merger movement began in the 1960s, reached a peak in 1969, and then gradually declined. Many of the acquisitions involved giant firms in one industry buying up large companies in totally unrelated industries. Such mergers are called conglomerate mergers. A classic example is Mobil Oil Corporation's purchase of the huge retail chain Montgomery Ward & Company.

Mergers in the last ten years were in the thousands. More important is the value of the transactions, which has risen sharply. The number of mergers and acquisitions apply only to those valued at $100 million or more. The petroleum industry had mergers and acquisitions valued at closed to $80 billion between 1981 and 1984. Other industries experiencing large takeovers were banking and finance, insurance, mining and mineral, and processed foods.

You will hear a talk presented by a reporter. This talk is about mergers.

You have to complete the sentences 23--30 by choosing the correct answer.

Mark one letter A, B or C.

The most common kind of consolidation today is ______.

A.the cooperation

B.the joint venture

C.the merger
