Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to keep the dead from decaying.

Scientists are using tree rings to learn what's been happening on the sun's surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As a tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk taking up chemical elements from the air. By looking up the dements in the rings from the given year, scientists can tell what dements were in the air that year. Dr. Stevenson is analyzing one element—earbon14 in rings from both living and dead trees. Some of the rings go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon14 trail back in time, he found carbonn4 levels change with the intensity of solar burning. You see the sun has cycles. Sometimes it burns fiercely and other times it is relatively calm. During the sun's violent periods, it throws off charged particles in fast moving strings called solar winds. 听力原文： Edgar Poe, an American writer, was born in 1809. His parents were actors. Edgar was a baby when his father left the family. He was two years old when his mother died. He was taken into the home of a wealthy business man named John Allen. He then received his new name, Edgar Allen Poe. As a young man, Poe attended the University of Virginia. It is said that he was found dead after days of heavy drinking.

听力原文： In Greece only rich people will rest in peace forever when they die. Most of the population, however, will be undisturbed for only three years. Then they will be dug up, washed, compressed into a small tin box and placed in a bone room. If the body has only partially decayed, it is reburied in a smaller cheaper grave, but not for long the body will be dug up again some time later when it has fully decayed. Buying a piece of land for a grave is the only way to avoid this process. Lack of space in Athens is the main reason why the dead are dug up after the three years. The city is so overcrowded that, sometimes, dead bodies are kept in hospitals for over a week until a grave is found. Athens' city council wants to introduce cremation ,that is, burning dead bodies as a means of dealing with the problem. But the Greek Church resists this practice. They believe the only place where people burn is hell. So burning dead bodies is against the Greek concept of life after death. To save space, the church suggested burying the bodies standing up instead of lying down. Some people purposed building multi-storey underground graveyards.
