听力原文: We don't know when man first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to keep the dead from decaying.

Stealing salt was considered a major crime during some periods of history. In the 18th century, for instance, if a person was caught stealing salt, he could be put in jail. History records that about ten thousand people were put in jail that century for stealing salt. About 150 years before, in the year 1533, taking more than one's share of salt was punishable as a crime. The offender's ear was cut off!

Salt was an important item on the table of a king. It was traditionally placed in front of the king when he sat down to eat. Important guests at the king's table were seated near the salt. Less important guests were given seats far away from it.

听力原文: You can tell the age of a tree by counting its rings. But these records of tree's life really say a lot more. Scientists are using tree rings to learn what's been happening on the sun's surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As a tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk taking up chemical elements from the air. By looking up the dements in the rings from the given year, scientists can tell what dements were in the air that year. Dr. Stevenson is analyzing one element—earbon14 in rings from both living and dead trees. Some of the rings go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon14 trail back in time, he found carbonn4 levels change with the intensity of solar burning. You see the sun has cycles. Sometimes it burns fiercely and other times it is relatively calm. During the sun's violent periods, it throws off charged particles in fast moving strings called solar winds. The particles interfere with the formation of carbon14 co. Earth. When there's mom solar rand activity, less carbon14 is produced. Ten thousand years of tree fines show that the carbon 14 level rises and falls about every 420 years. The scientists concluded that the solar wind activity must fellow the same cycle.

(26)

A.To examine the chemical elements in the Ice Age.

B.To look into the pattern of solar wind activity.

C.To analyze the composition of different trees.

D.To find out the origin of carbon14 on Earth.

听力原文: Edgar Poe, an American writer, was born in 1809. His parents were actors. Edgar was a baby when his father left the family. He was two years old when his mother died. He was taken into the home of a wealthy business man named John Allen. He then received his new name, Edgar Allen Poe. As a young man, Poe attended the University of Virginia. He was a good student, but he liked to drink alcohol and play card games for money. As an unskilled game player, he often lost money. Since he couldn't pay his gambling losses, he left the university and began working for magazines. He worked hard, yet he was not well paid, or well known. At the age of 27, he got married. For a time it seemed that Poe would find happiness, but his wife was sick for most of their marriage, and died in 1847.

Through all his crises, Poe produced many stories and poems which appeared in different publications, yet he didn't become famous until 1845, when his poem, The Raven, was published. There is a question, however, about Poe's importance in American Literature. Some critics say Poe was one of America's best writers, and even had a great influence on many French writers. But others disagree. They my Poe's work is difficult to understand and most of his writing de scribes very unpleasant situations and events. Edgar Allen Poe died in 1849 when he was 40 years old. It is said that he was found dead after days of heavy drinking.

(33)

A.His father caught a serious disease.

B.His mother passed away.

C.His mother left him to marry a rich businessman.

D.His father took to drinking.

听力原文: In Greece only rich people will rest in peace forever when they die. Most of the population, however, will be undisturbed for only three years. Then they will be dug up, washed, compressed into a small tin box and placed in a bone room. If the body has only partially decayed, it is reburied in a smaller cheaper grave, but not for long the body will be dug up again some time later when it has fully decayed. Buying a piece of land for a grave is the only way to avoid this process. The cost of the grave is so great that most people choose to rent a grave for three years and even after being dug up, lasting peace is still not guaranteed. If no one pays for renting space in a bone room, the skeleton is removed and stored in a building in a poor part of the town. Lack of space in Athens is the main reason why the dead are dug up after the three years. The city is so overcrowded that, sometimes, dead bodies are kept in hospitals for over a week until a grave is found. Athens' city council wants to introduce cremation ,that is, burning dead bodies as a means of dealing with the problem. But the Greek Church resists this practice. They believe the only place where people burn is hell. So burning dead bodies is against the Greek concept of life after death. To save space, the church suggested burying the bodies standing up instead of lying down. Some people purposed building multi-storey underground graveyards.

(33)

A.Rent a grave.

B.Bury the body.

C.Bury the dead near a church.

D.Buy a piece of land for a grave.
