Everyone has heard tile phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words". Videoconferencing pr
ovides that picture, bringing decision makers together for face-to-face meetings regardless of their location. Merely hearing words spoken in a phone conversation limits total communication. Adding a visual link to see the face and the body language enhances communication. Seeing the picture allows the participants to comprehend the intended meaning, not just the perceived meaning of conversation.

"Researchers have suggested that when there is an incongruity between the verbal and the nonverbal message, we tend to believe the nonverbal one," according to Patton and Giffin, authors of Decision Making Group Interaction. In videoconferencing, hand and arm movement as well as other gestures can illustrate an idea or express an emotional state. More important, facial expression and eye movement can communicate valuable information that is lost in a mere telephone conversation. According to Goss and O'Hair, authors of Communicating in Interpersonal Relationships, Seven research projects in nonverbal communication have indicated that the face may be the most important body area through which nonverbal cues are conveyed. More accurate communication is achieved by facial expression and nonverbal cues.

"Today's business professionals spend more than 50 percent of the time in meetings, and nearly half of that time they feel is unproductive. Can you imagine as a resource manager spending money on travel for meetings that professionals feel are unproductive." said Francine Savage, New Business Development Manager of 3M visual System Division. Savage suggests that money invested in videoconferencing equipment will eventually be recouped via the saving from not sending, employees 'to meetings.

Some organizations will have to invest significant capital to take advantage of this powerful technology. Such is not the case in the Office of the ASARDA. Its information management office has been building a dynamic videoconferencing program for the past 4 years. There are now more than 60 desktop videoconferencing units installed on individual workstation and 12 conference room systems. At heart of the program is a multipoint control unit equipped with the latest software and options. This allows us full control and flexibility to support ASARDA's multipoint conferencing needs.

The power of videoconferencing lies in that it can ______.

A.enhance the communication

B.increase productivity

C.understand the real meaning of the other party

D.all of the above

One of the more discernible trends in the financial-service industry in re cent times has
been the adoption of programs designed to encourage more personalized relationships between an institution's employees and its clients, particularly those clients who are major depositors. The expression most commonly used to describe this type of program is "relationship banking". A good definition is provided in the 1985 book "Marketing Financial Services":

In relationship banking the emphasis is on establishing a long-term multiple-service relationship; on satisfying the totality of the client's financial service needs; and on minimizing the need or desire of clients to splinter their financial business among various institutions.

Implicit within any definition of relationship banking is recognition that the financial-service requirements of one individual or relatively homogeneous group. A successful relationship banking program is, therefore, dependent in a large part on the development of a series of "financial-serviced packages": each designed to meet the needs of identifiable homogeneous groups.

Another dimension of relationship banking is the development of highly personalized relationships between employee and client. In most financial institutions today the client is serviced by any employee who happens to be free at the time, regardless of the nature of the transaction. Personalized relation ships are therefore difficult to establish. In a full relationship banking pro gram, however, the client knows there is one individual within the institution who has intimate knowledge of the client's requirements and preferences regarding complex transactions. Over time, the client develops a high level of confidence in this employee. In short, a personalized relationship evolves between client and employee.

With what subject is the passage mainly concerned?

A.The decline of the financial-service industry.

B.Variety within financial services.

C.A way of making banking more personal.

D.Increasing everyday banking transactions.

听力原文: Secretary Rice joined New York officials and former Olympic medalists in a sendo
ff rally for the city's Olympic delegation. She called the Olympic Games an expression of human excellence that knows no race, gender or nationality. That makes New York, Ms. Rice said, the perfect place for the Olympics.

"People from all over the world, from all ethnic backgrounds and nationalities have come to New York over the centuries and worked hard to achieve what they have achieved. In that way, this city is the perfect place to host an Olympic Games. If you walk along the streets of New York, you will see the faces and hear the accents of the entire world. When the Olympic Committee looks at New York, it will see in microcosm of what the Olympics speaks to and that is the common humanity of all people."

During a news conference, reporters repeatedly asked Ms. Rice and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg why President Bush is not traveling to Singapore to lobby on behalf of New York's bid. Mr. Bloomberg said the visit by the secretary of state and a videotaped message from the president will show the Olympic Committee that New York's bid has the full support of the United States government.

New York's Olympic supporters have faced a rocky road at home. The centerpiece of the city's original presentation, a new stadium on the west side of Manhattan, failed to win state funding after considerable public dissent. Instead, an existing baseball stadium in Queens County will be renovated.

New York officials are upbeat about the city's chances of hosting the 2012 Olympics, but long-time Olympic observers give Paris the edge. London, Madrid, and Moscow are the other finalists.

Who will represent the US government and visit Singapore to lobby on behalf of New York's bid?

A.President Bush.

B.Secretary of State Ms. Rice.

C.Former US Olympic medalists.

D.New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

阅读理解:If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe(衣柜) packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability(耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

A) cost B) appearance

C) comfort D) suitability

39. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A) New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.

B) The constant changes in women's clothing reflect their strength of character.

C) The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.

D) Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women.
